Counterpoint to my The King of Kong Review

So on Tuesday I 'reviewed' a new documentary called The King of Kong about a man named Steve Wiebe who was trying to break the world record in Donkey Kong and his struggle to get his new record recognized by the governing body of video game records and the former (spoiler alert) and again current record holder Billy Mitchell. In the documentary Billy Mitchell (pictured) is painted as the bad guy in the film and when discussing the film my emotions led me to use what may have been harsh words calling Billy Mitchell a "douche" and something else....... what was it........ oh yes I think it was "evil".

I received a few emails asking about the film and a few emails about classic arcade games..... and oh yeah guess who else I got an email from......

Mr.
Midwesterner,
Thanks for the review... and all your thoughts. Hope you take these "Just for fun" moments and have fun with them... That is what I do with my wife and 3 children. When I am not working in our family businesses we are involved in football, cheerleading, baseball, softball, track, gymnastics,.... and so on... I took notice to your blog because my wife was born in NYC and grew up on Long Island. She is quite the success story herself... you may not want to hear about that. Again, a sincere hope for the best to a transplanted midwesterner in NYC. It a great place...

Never
Surrender,
Never,

Billy
Mitchell

(It is really is)

After a little research I truly have no reason to doubt that this was in fact from Billy Mitchell (and no disrespect to Mr. Mitchell but I would find it hard to believe people would go around pretending to be him and discussing his family). A couple of points..... First of all the origin of my original post was to try to get people to see what I found to be a very compelling documentary that I am not sure most people would want to see. Yes, of course I used words to describe Billy Mitchell that the director of the documentary wanted me to use because the film takes place from the challenger Steve Wiebe's perspective and I would assume the film is a bit biased in that fact.

But also there are a few questions I have for Mr. Mitchell and in my response to him I did ask him why when he finally met Steve Wiebe for the first time and Steve greeted him by saying "hello" did Billy completely ignore him then mention to his wife that (I am paraphrasing) 'there are some people we do not need to associate with'. Maybe something happened off camera that the viewer was not privy too, maybe it was simply Mr. Mitchell looking at Steve as his competition and like many competitors they do not socialize with said competition. Fair enough either way, but I would like to know.

I mentioned in my original post that it appeared Billy Mitchell who set the original record in 1982 was still living off these feats and I think Mr. Michell's main point in his email was that he has other concerns in his life other than his video game records. I would agree with that, but in the film it is obvious these records still mean a great deal to him. To be fair, if I was the best at something I would not want to give that up for anything no matter what it was. I mean look at Hank Aaron over the last few months, this was not a happy man. Of course he gave up his record to a steroid user (I refuse to say 'alleged', the man admitted to a grand jury that he 'unknowingly' took steroids), and I should point out I am in no way implying that Steve Wiebe took steroids to break Billy Mitchell's record in Donkey Kong.

I should point out that (again spoiler alert) Steve Wiebe did officially break Billy's record. In the last few weeks, after a sizable donation to charity which should be applauded, Billy agreed to play again and reclaimed his title. If Mr. Mitchell writes again (and I hope he would) I will share any updates unless instructed otherwise, also be sure to tune in tomorrow when I respond to the letter I am sure to get now from Barry Bonds (I am in no way insinuating Billy Mitchell took any performance enhancing drugs in constructing his letter).

Maybe he'll write back. I still get daily emails from the cast of 'Murderball'.

You are like Tiki Barber, You both retired from your "main" profession, but both of you have a forum in which you can pontificate. He fires out some dirt about Eli, and you review a documentary. Eli and the documentary dude fire back, and we have a media frenzy in which it is alleged EVERYONE is now on steroids...you are also like Jose Canseco... writing stuff about steroids....

wow..I can't believe he wrote to you. Was he googling himself? Unreal.

I get a lot of emails from the Transformers. Can you believe they still use Hotmail???

Seriously though, this is way cool. Ask him for flaming barrel tips.

@Matt: that is a large cast, I commend you for the time that must take

@Bill: that is the first time I have ever been compared to an NFL running back (except Icky Woods when I dance) so thank you.

@countryroads and Clinton: It was kind of surprising. I appreciate his email was not malicious in any way, well played Mr. Mitchell.

Amazing. I'm sure Billy's tough exterior is all strategy. I mean, that was always the way it was in Rocky. And sure that was boxing but then you've gotta ask yourself is boxing and competitive gaming really so different?

Definitely interesting. It's always fun to see blogging subjects crawl out of the woodwork. I wrote up Shari Goldhagen's book "Family and Other Accidents" (which I insist people read if we're to be perma-friends) and she emailed me to say thanks, and there was an exchange or two. She's good people.

PS
Found you through an Irish and a Jew. Enjoyed the posts I've seen so far.

I think this is really funny! And a little disturbing. And because I am at my new job and have no work to really do as of yet - I did some research! First, I looked to see if other blogs that reviewed the film bagged on Billy the way you did MINYC - to see if he also wrote them. From what I found, most people just said to go see it and that it was entertaining, oh well. Then I found a bunch of professional reviews and finally, an article chronicling Billy's side from Billy himself. And in the middle of the article I found this gem….

"One person who thinks Billy Mitchell should let it slide is Steve Sanders. He's Mitchell's best friend and a skilled "DK" player himself. He dismisses the remaining suspicion of Wiebe's abilities as "black-helicopter" conspiracy theory. But he also laments how the film portrays his friend, a "quality individual" — it leaves his better days on the cutting-room floor. "Is the movie accurate?" Sanders asked. "I would say yes. Is the movie fair? I would say no." He thinks Mitchell should ride the "King of Kong" infamy to some sort of success."

Anyways- amusing pop culture coincidences aside, it sounds like this documentary (like so many others – looking at you Michael Moore!) is more than a little biased and probably could tell either side of the story with the right editing.

"And so on" = perusing the internet for blogger that are talking smack about him?

Awesome.

Let ME take this moment to imply that Steve Wiebe took steroids to break Billy Mitchell's record in Donkey Kong. I'm so sick of all these guys hopped up on steroids taking over honest arcade game records. Steve Wiebe will always be * to me.

@Lynn: Steve Sanders (not the Ian Ziering character from Beverly Hills 90210) is in the film quite a bit. Steve and Billy met in the early 80's at a photo shoot for video game champions. Steve Sanders for Donkey Kong and Billy for Centipede.

Turns out Steve was 'exaggerating his high score and in a head to head Billy wiped the floor with him and now have been friends ever since.

To be honest Steve Sanders comes off as a pretty nice guy in the movie and gives credit to Steve Wiebe for being a solid guy.

If I had a nickel for every best friend I met at an 80's photo shoot that beat my ass in some game I claimed to have the high score on....I would have no nickles. And I am still picturing Steve Sanders with a bleach blonde mullet of mini-curls and no one can take that away from me!

But I will concede that in real life both Billy and Steve are probably very normal, nice guys.

and hey! I would be stoked to have a documentary about something I was involved in - bias or no bias...

Bonus points if you get his screen name and live blog an IM debate with him.

Quick update. I just got an email from Billy answering the questions I sent him. I will post an update later.

@mortarbored: Actually he sent me his phone number. Seems like an interesting guy, it might be fun to talk to him.

@Lioux: Done

Might I remind you not to talk of me in your blog posts. I don't appreciate bloggers discussing me and my past - especially the mid 1990s.

P.S. I don't send email, I only make housecalls.
